Teaching Healthcare IT That Ships in One Semester

This research program studies how hospital and healthcare IT staff act as drivers of organizational innovation — a role the field has historically under-theorized. Publications include a model of IT staff as organizational technology innovation capabilities, a study of hospital IT manager attitudes toward mobile innovation, an integrated model of EMR adoption incorporating the organization as an artifact, and ongoing work on the IT staff role in telehealth advancement during the COVID natural experiment.

That research directly informs the Healthcare Information Systems Development course taught in Kennesaw State’s Healthcare Management and Informatics master’s program, where student projects are built around real client problems. Graduate Phil King’s class project — a Python dashboard that cut a client healthcare practice’s daily reporting work from hours to minutes — is a representative outcome, profiled by Kennesaw State News in 2019.
